Mugs and Plates for a Cause

 Dear Parents,

Good morning.

Two weeks ago, with the help of Mrs Keiko (Leon's mom) and Mrs Josie (Lingyi's mom), our Grade 2s expressed their creativity by decorated mugs.

These mugs are now put on sale. If you wish to purchase the mug that your child designed, place your order here

Have a blessed week ahead.

Always,

Ms J

Christmas Songs

Today, we started with our new song to play: Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer.

How We Express Ourselves

This year, Grade 2s also have a year-long unit to explore. The unit is under the trandsiciplinary theme, How we express ourselves.

In this unit, we aim to understand the central idea: We can express and appreciate uniqueness through art. As this unit is directly connected to arts, lessons in Music and Visual Arts are integrated to it.

A few weeks ago, we uncover the meaning of EXPRESS by asking each child to share different ways they show different emotions. This week, we focused on the word UNIQUENESS. They agreed that UNIQUENESS is similar to 'what makes each one of us different or special'. Through our brainstorming, according to the students, these are the factors that make us different from others.

We also did a simple art work that applies the forces - PUSH and PULL. Hence the name, Push and Pull Painting. See the finished work below. Try to guess which one is whose and what each one looks like to you.

Reflection: CARING

This week, our focus for reflection is being CARING. To help them with this, this place mat of a great classmate will be a good guide.

Visual Texts

This week, the learners explored visual texts. They derived meanings shown by the different examples of visual texts.

In Math, Grade 2s learned about graphs as a form of visual text. They looked into different types of graphs and its parts.

They used their research skills and find information about interests of other students at DSKI. They gathered information by doing a survey. They completed the survey this week. They will show the results in tally chart and bar graph form next week,

How the world works

Grade 2 has started exploring the new unit under the Transdisciplinary Theme: How the world works.

Our central idea for this unit is Forces and materials are used to make our lives easier.

In this unit, we will explore what forces are, how forces work and how we use forces to make things work.

The key concepts that will drive our inquiry are form, function and causation.

We will use our research and thinking skills as our tools to learn.

As part of tuning in, the learners unpacked the words Force and Motion by asking people around, watching videos about them and looking at the dictionary.

Based on what they got, they came up with their own understanding of the words.

Decorating mugs for Christmas

This week, Grade 2s decorated mugs. Ms Keiko, Leon's mom, and Ms Josie, Lingyi's mom facilitated the activity. The students were given two choices: to use ready-made stickers or create their own design. A lot of them opted to create their own design but ended up adding stickers to decorate the inner part of the mug. They were so creative with their designs. Even those who chose stickers were careful in placing them in the mug. After seeing their finished products, they were so proud of their accomplishment. Thank you Ms Keiko and Ms Josie! :) Great job, Grade 2s!
