From the Expert's Lens: Green vs Brown Energy sources

Last Wednesday, Grades 1 and 2 were privileged to have invited and have listened to one expert on the environment - Mrs Josie Qian (Lingyi's mom), an environmental engineer.

She showed to the class the major difference between Green energy sources and Brown energy sources. She clearly explained the benefit of using renewable energy sources and emphasized the bad effects of using non-renewable resources.

She brought her a set of materials that she used to show how power from the wind is changed into electricity. It was fun!

Math-a-thon

To check their understanding of the concepts, retention of the process and mastery of Math skills, we did a Math-a-thon on seesaw today where they will compete with their own selves in solving Multiplication and/or division problems.

In this activity, they are free to choose the level they want to try and complete it to the best ability they could. They can try other levels too if they want more challenges.

Environmental Problems

Most of the questions and wonderings posted on the Wonder Wall show interest on how the environmental problems started and how they affect people.

In order to address these, we came up with expert groups. They were grouped based on their interest.

Each group will focus on the three key concepts of the unit:

FORM - What is it? How doe sit look like? Define it. Describe it.

CONNECTION - What are the causes of it? How does it affect people and others?

RESPONSIBILITY - What steps can we do to address this problem?

This week, they are FINDING OUT information that will help them become KNOWLEDGEABLE of their chosen topic. Next week, they will find ways on how they can share the information to others.
