As a class, the students collected information of their own perspectives of what a shelter is and what it does. Then they asked people around and compared the answers they got. They use the data they collected to define the word SHELTER as a class. Here is what they came up with.
Our next unit revolves around the transdisciplinary theme How We Organise Ourselves where in we will explore and look into the human-made systems and communities, societal decision-making and their impact on human kind.
The Central idea of this unit is
"Living things around the world build shelters differently for various reasons."
In this unit, we will explore the following lines of inquiry:
- different types of shelters around the world
- how shelters are designed and built
- why shelters are built the way they are
As part of our pre-assessment, we unlocked the word SHELTER. It is a surprise that students showed different meaningful ideas and viewpoints about what shelter is (as shown below)
Looking at their answers show a very promising learning experience for all of us. ❤️
As part of the warm welcome to our Grade 2 students, we started the week by introducing the third element of Visual Arts - colours.
The Grade 2s chose a black and white printed photo, traced it and gave life to it by choosing the right colours. The outcome is impressive.
When it was the last day of school before winter break, guess who visited our school? The Grinch!
But of course, the Grinch couldn't stop Christmas. The day ended with Santa's coming, gift-giving and merry and joyous cheering!

This week, Grade 2s explored how forces make our lives easier. The learners connect force with work and found out that work happens when there is movement or change in location. Through this definition of work, the learners connect making work easier to machines, thus we explored different simple machines.
The class was divided into 6 groups and each group chose a simple machine to explore. They explained through their poster what that simple machines is, examples of where they are found and also created a simple model of it.
This week, the Grade 2s butterflies and bees spread their wings and explored their skills in making their original games that use force and gravity and movement. They worked in pairs and groups of three members to plan, design and create their games.
Teamwork was very evident in the process. They got the chance to see what other groups did, played the games that they did and provide feedback on their classmates' works.
Their reflection shows how much they enjoyed making this game.
Grade 2s did a simple experiment to find out which material can slide easily on the cardboard (less friction) - plastic, rubber, wax paper or foil.
The general finding was that the wooden block wrapped in rubber did not fall easily on the ramp. The block wrapped in plastic and foil slid easily.
