Last April 22 is Earth Day celebration. To show Grade 2s support to Mother Earth, they reflected on their ways that they think are waste resources and made a promise that they can commit to.
To document that, they created an Earth Day poster with their hand traced on it. Inside the traced hand, they wrote their pledge to Earth.
The much-awaited time has come. Our class put their collaborative project into test.
All of the shelters withstood RAIN. The inside of the house stayed dry even after pouring water on it.
All shelters showed strength against WIND as they all stood proud even after fanning them with a huge card.
Almost ALL stood still after shaking them hard (EARTHQUAKE).
Whatever is the result, what is most important is the experience of building the structure with peers and applying their understanding about sustainable shelters.
Who does not like an exciting game such as the egg hunting? Children, young ones and young-at-hearts will always find pleasure in doing this game.
Thanks to our ever-loving and supportive PTA who prepared the egg chocolates and goodies for the kids.
Grade 2s had a simple but really fun egg hunting at the library last Monday, 11am 2 April 2021.
The children were so engaged and committed to find their much-awaited chocolate eggs.
We are wrapping up our unit. It is time to put their understanding into application. 😊
For the past weeks, the class has been exploring different shelters, how shelters are made and materials used to make shelters sustainable. Now it is the time to apply what they know by making a shelter that can survive heavy rain, strong wind and disastrous earthquake.
The students were given the chance to choose their partners. Together with their partners, they planned their shelters, chose materials to use and assigned responsibilities and built the shelters.
They have completed the shelters this week. Their shelters (outputs) will be tested on Monday, 12th April 2021.

This week we are very grateful to have an expert give us a talk (online via zoom) about the process of building a shelter.
Mr. Benjamin Morineau, a parent in our school, gave information on how shelters (buildings in general) are built. He also cited information about industrial shelter or the shelters they build in their company to protect the materials they store and equipment they use.
The students were amazed at how certain shelters show strength to even protect people from blasts and bombs.
In spite of the limited time, the students learnt a lot of interesting information in that session.

As we are focused in strength of materials, we had a simple experiment done in the class where in the students experimented to find out which materials can protect us from rain, wind and heat.
The following materials were checked: wood, brick, rock, straw
From the experiment, the students found out that the straw material gives weak protection against wind and water.
This week, we were fortunate to have one of our busy parents to come to talk about building sustainable houses, Mr. Henrik Kohberg (Ella's Dad).
In his session with our students, he related the choice of materials to the story of the Three Little Pigs and focused on the type of material used and how it is connected to having a long-lasting house. He also answered related questions coming from our wonder wall.
